This operation is a straight forward scam. They will rush you through the initial inspection of the car for previous damages. The small X's on the inspection card are all over the place, there must have been 30 or 40 of them on the card. Yet the car was perfectly fine. All the "marked dents" were normal "wear and tear" scratches, none more serious than 2-3 cm surface scratches. To get them all would have meant going over the car with a looking class and take all day. Be that as it may, I probably should have been alarmed by this. But after a 12 hr flight, I had to get going.

The car was fine. It performed well without problems. Five days later, when I got back to check in , with 3 hours to spare for my flight, the "fun" started. The inspector went through the car with a fine tooth comb and "found" two minuscule scratches (one of them on a rocker panel!) and there was no way to prove I was responsible for them. The guy knew it. I knew it. The guy knew that I knew it. I protested loudly but he made clear, in a fairly intimidating way that he wasn't going to budge on the two scratches. Hence a ***-a-*** of 400 pounds on my credit card. Yes 400 (700 dollars). And that is ON TOP of the 500 dollars already given as a CDW caution at rental time. Right now I have 1200$ sitting on the dock of the VISA.

Now, this is a pretty smart scam for a couple of reasons: 1- When you dump your car (the depot is actually at The Holiday Inn, a few kms from the Heathrow airport and you have to take a bus to get there), you have a plane to catch and you don't have time to stick around to argue with the untreatable gopher who is taking in your car. 2- Almost all people checking in their cars are foreigners who will have precious few resources to fight the charges once they are back home. And you simply have to go catch your plane.

The presence of 30-40 marks on the inspection card meant that money was collected by the company on CDW claims without the "repairs" being done, meaning the company had collected at least 40 times the price of rentals on the rental life of the car to that point. A tidy sum, needless to say, that exceeds 3 or 4 times the amount taken for the rental itself.

The staff was at best offhandish and, when they were called on the scam, turned slightly intimidating, going through a detailed script on how to respond when the "customer" becomes flustered. I threatened to call the police at the end. The guy said, sure, go ahead and even handed me the phone, saying the cops would take at least 45 minutes to an hour to get there... smiling while telling you this. Of course, I would have missed my plane.

Every customer in the office was outraged by the attitude but they went through the motion as if nothing had happened. This was likely the tenth time on that day they had fleeced a customer.

It is an absolutely repulsive practice, prays on the destabilized traveller and they don't even bother hiding what they are doing. I have VISA on their case after I posted this detailed account every where I could think of.

If you wish to know more do this search : "Green motion CDW scam" on both Google and Tripadvisor. You will find dozens and dozens of people who went through the same thing.
